BIST 100 (XU100): the Turkish stock market index explained

The BIST 100 is a benchmark of 100 shares traded on Borsa İstanbul, identified by XU100. Its lira performance is a starting point for understanding Turkish equities; it is not the same as an international investor’s return after currency changes, dividends and costs.

BIST, Borsa Istanbul and the Istanbul Stock Exchange

Borsa İstanbul is Türkiye’s exchange operator. BIST is the abbreviation used in its index and market names; Istanbul Stock Exchange and ISE appear in older material. Bourse Istanbul is this independent publication, not the exchange. Always check the official index page for the current constituent list and index information.

BIST 100, BIST 30 and the wider market

The BIST 100 and BIST 30 are different baskets, commonly referenced by XU100 and XU030. An index’s number of companies does not make it equally weighted or free from concentration. Before comparing performance, check the weighting rules, review period, currency and whether the series is a price or total-return index. Our company directory is a curated research universe, not an official BIST 100 membership list.

A gain in lira can mean a different return in dollars

Consider a hypothetical investment rising 30% in Turkish lira while USD/TRY rises 25%. Its approximate dollar price return is 1.30 ÷ 1.25 − 1 = 4%, before dividends, taxes and trading costs. A rise in USD/TRY means more lira are needed to buy one dollar. Use the same start and end dates for both series.

What an index chart cannot tell you

A benchmark chart does not explain an individual company’s debt, governance, cash generation or valuation. Start with sector exposures and large index weights, then read company disclosures on KAP. For banks, funding and credit quality matter; for exporters, demand and the currency mix of costs matter. A macro story only becomes an investment thesis when the company evidence supports it.

Where to check the current level

Use the exchange or an appropriately licensed broker or data service for an up-to-date index quote. Check its timestamp and delay. This guide explains the benchmark and does not supply a live BIST 100 price or trading signal. The Premium Investor Pack develops the currency, company and portfolio frameworks behind these questions.

Common questions

Is XU100 the same as BIST 100?

XU100 identifies the BIST 100 index. Check the provider’s currency and series definition when comparing charts.

Can a foreign investor buy the index itself?

An index is a benchmark rather than a security. Check the holdings, costs, jurisdiction and eligibility of any fund or instrument intended to track it with the relevant provider.
